This setting of a Gospel text, likely intended for use around Candlemas, recounts the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. The Latin words describe Mary bringing Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, and Simeon's prophecy of Jesus as a light to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel. Costanzo Festa, a notable composer of the Italian Renaissance, writes for an a cappella choir of five voices (ATTTB). His rich vocal textures would have been well-suited to the expressive needs of this sacred occasion, blending devotional text with sonorous choral writing.
