This potent setting of a Latin text calls for penitence and prayer. The words, "Let us change our attire to sackcloth and ashes; let us fast and weep before the Lord, for our God is merciful to forgive our sins," paint a scene of deep contrition. The second part of the text, "Beside the vestibule and altar shall the priests and Levites, ministers of the Lord, weep, saying: Spare, O Lord, spare your people; and do not destroy those who cry out to you, O Lord," further emphasizes this plea for divine mercy. José Maurício Nunes Garcia's SATB composition imbues these devotional verses with a fittingly solemn and expressive musical character, suitable for liturgical contexts. It is a profound reflection on repentance and God's compassion.
