Im Mayen by Orlando di Lasso — Lyrics

About Im Mayen

Orlando di Lasso’s Im Mayen opens with bright, imitative writing that immediately evokes the spirit of spring. The German text celebrates the month of May, with its cocks crowing and the joy of sowing seeds. This secular German Lied, or madrigal, for SATTB voices is rich in contrapuntal interest, with the five parts often weaving in and out of each other. The composer captures the playful, amorous sentiments of the text, which includes a charming if somewhat earthy invitation to a maiden. The music’s energy reflects the vibrant imagery of the lyrics, from the agricultural work of sowing to the more intimate moments hinted at with the repeated refrain. It is a lively and engaging example of late Renaissance part-music.
