About Il prim' assalto
Simon de Baldis was a composer of the Italian Renaissance, and this secular madrigal for three voices (soprano, alto, tenor) exemplifies the genre's focus on expressive text setting. The Italian lyrics describe the overwhelming and painful first assault of love, which inflicts a mortal wound and leads to the singer's complete subjugation. The composer skillfully portrays the helplessness and despair felt by the lover, who, despite attempts at resistance, is forced into eternal servitude. The music would have been intended for intimate performance in private settings, a characteristic feature of madrigal culture.
