About Il est bel et bon
Pierre Passereau was a French composer of the Renaissance. This secular chanson, a lighthearted dialogue between two women discussing their husbands, is typical of the genre. It is written for SATB choir, with the composer using imitative polyphony to depict the chattering women and the clucking of chickens. The text expresses a woman's delight in her husband who efficiently manages the household and feeds the poultry, leaving her free to pursue her own pleasures. The onomatopoeic 'co co co co da' towards the end adds a playful, almost mischievous, touch to the overall character of the piece.
