Tobias Finndin's I Jämbredd opens with a close, imitative texture, the voices weaving together in an intimate dialogue. The SATB setting gradually opens out, reflecting the poem's exploration of proximity and connection. Ann Smith's Swedish text speaks of a shared space where individuals, for a brief moment, move as equals, their distances and attractions palpable. The composer captures the ephemeral nature of this shared experience, where the dance of life, on its own terms, grants a fleeting invulnerability. This is a secular work that uses the four-part choir to create a sense of both individual presence and collective embrace.
