About Hymn to Diana
Frederick A. Challinor composed this SATB setting of a poem invoking Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt and the moon. Set in English, this is a secular partsong, a genre popular in the 19th century. The text praises Diana's beauty and asks her to shine her light upon the world after sunset, imploring her to temporarily set aside her hunting accoutrements. The choir is asked to convey the serene and stately atmosphere of the moonlit night, celebrating the goddess's radiant presence and her power to transform darkness into light.
