GWEYE ACHEKUM by SIR ADEJOH JOHN — Lyrics
About GWEYE ACHEKUM
"Gweye Achekum" is a lively and rhythmic Christmas song composed in the Idoma language by Sir Adejoh John. Written with a traditional feel, the piece captures the vibrant joy of the Nativity. The opening lines immediately invite the faithful to journey together to Bethlehem ("a wa ka lo gu Bethlehem") to witness the newborn King, echoing the joyful songs of the angels ("A engelu wa je alleluya").
For Nigerian choirs, this piece is a wonderful addition to the Christmas repertoire. Its energetic call-and-response structure and driving rhythm make it an excellent choice for the Entrance procession or a festive Thanksgiving during the Christmas season. The repetitive, celebratory chorus of "Gwe ye achekum" naturally encourages the congregation to join in the singing and dancing.
Singing this piece brings a deep sense of cultural expression to the liturgy. As the choir builds through the verses, proclaiming "Immanuel Owoicho" (God with us), the music creates an atmosphere of genuine celebration. It is a joyful way to honor the birth of Christ while embracing the vibrant musical traditions of the Idoma people.
