About Grete Magd suchte Merten
This secular German madrigal for STT voices by Valentin Haussmann tells a humorous tale of a maid named Grete searching for her lover, Merten. She finds him asleep in a stable, having clearly overindulged. The text describes her attempts to wake him, culminating in a playful, perhaps slightly startling, action. Haussmann's music would likely reflect the narrative's lighthearted and slightly dramatic unfolding, offering a charming example of Renaissance part-music. Its directness and engaging story make it suitable for a programme seeking engaging and characterful Renaissance repertoire.
