Grazie ch'a pochi by Andrea Gabrieli — Lyrics

About Grazie ch'a pochi

Andrea Gabrieli was a composer of the Venetian school, a master of polychoral and monumental styles. His madrigals, however, offer a more intimate exploration of text and harmony. Grazie ch'a pochi il ciel largo destina is a secular Italian madrigal for SAATTB voices. The text praises a rare woman endowed with extraordinary virtues: a wise mind beneath fair hair, divine beauty in a humble lady, singular grace, a singing voice that touches the soul, celestial movement, and a radiant spirit. It continues to describe her eyes that illuminate darkness, capable of stealing souls and imparting them to others, and her sweet, profound words. The final lines reveal the poet's transformation through these divine qualities, feeling like a magus.
