Gedding Carol by Roger Lawrence — Lyrics
R.: Quae Olim Vates praedixere
Ea nunc omnia perfecta sunt
As long ago prophets foretold the future
so now has all been brought to pass.
And from Jesse's tree
a tender root springs forth,
And thro' the goodness of the Lord

About Gedding Carol
Roger Lawrence's Gedding Carol is a moving Christmas work for SSATB choir, setting an English text that blends prophecy and fulfillment. It begins by reflecting on ancient predictions now brought to pass, heralding the birth of a child from Jesse's line who will bring peace. The text evokes the imagery of people walking in darkness seeing a wondrous light, and finds the Saviour in humble Bethlehem. It concludes by naming the child Emmanuel, Prince of Peace, whose government shall never cease. The SATB voicing offers rich harmonic possibilities, ideal for conveying the sacred message of this Christmas anthem.
