Gbẹbọ Wa, Dakun by Ademola Adeosun — Lyrics
About Gbẹbọ Wa, Dakun
"Gbẹbọ Wa, Dakun" is an earnest Yoruba offertory hymn that voices the congregation's plea for God to accept their gifts. Written by Ademola Adeosun in 2009 for the Gloria in Excelsis Deo Choir at LAUTECH in Ogbomoso, the piece carries a bright, rhythmic energy. The title itself is a direct appeal to the Holy Father to receive the sacrifice being brought to the altar, setting a tone of deep reverence mixed with joyful thanksgiving.
The lyrics are perfectly tailored for the presentation of gifts during Mass. In the first verse, the choir explicitly sings of bringing bread ("Akara l'a muwa") and wine made from the fruits God has provided. As the song moves into the chorus, the voices layer together to describe the offering as holy, perfect, and life-giving ("Ẹbọ mimọ, ẹbọ pipe"). For a choir, the interplay between the parts during these sections makes it an engaging piece to sing, lifting the spirit of the entire church as the bread and wine are carried forward.
