Gaude virgo by John Sheppard — Lyrics

About Gaude virgo

This setting of the Votive antiphon Gaude virgo Christipara is by John Sheppard. The text rejoices in the Virgin Mary as Christ-bearer, chosen by divine light and uniquely adorned by her celestial childbirth. It proclaims that through her, the divine seed was sown, crushing the serpent's head, referring to Christ's incarnation and subsequent triumph over Satan, death, and sin. Sheppard's work for SATTBB with divisions, and sometimes SATTBarB, allows for rich, sonorous textures. This polyphonic masterpiece from the sacred choral tradition offers a profound musical meditation on Marian theology and the salvation of humankind.
