About Festum nunc celebre III
This joyful Latin hymn celebrates Christ's ascension to heaven, the victor crowned and glorified by saints and angels. The text speaks of immense rejoicing and the immense gifts Christ bestows on humanity as he ascends. It then turns to prayer, asking God to protect his devoted servants from the devil's malice and the fires of hell. The singers are entreated to remember the eventual return of Christ the judge, not to inflict harsh punishment on the wicked, but to grant rewards to the just. This setting is for treble, tenor, and tenor voices (STT).
