Tiburtio Massaino's Feria VI in Parasceve is a powerful setting of the opening verses of the Lamentations of Jeremiah. This sacred work, designed for Tenebrae services on Good Friday, uses the Latin text to express profound sorrow and desolation. The composer's musical language vividly captures the prophet Jeremiah's lament over the destruction of Jerusalem and the suffering of its people. The text speaks of a once-populous city now sitting solitary, a queen of nations made a tributary. It recounts the tears of Jerusalem in the night, abandoned by friends and pursued by enemies. The music underscores the grief of Judah, forced into exile, and the mourning for Zion's ruined ways. This SATTB motet is a significant example of Renaissance polyphony dedicated to liturgical drama.
