About Fahren wir froh im Nachen
Giovanni Gastoldi was a prolific composer of secular Italian madrigals in the late Renaissance. This piece, Fahren wir froh im Nachen, is a German translation of one of his popular works. It is written for SSATB voices and features the joyous, light-hearted "fa la la" refrain characteristic of the genre. The text describes a cheerful boat ride where everyone joins in song and laughter. The mood shifts playfully with the arrival of Cupid, depicted as a little boy with a bow and arrow, who wishes to join the party. The other singers welcome him, inviting him to 'play' with his arrows, implying love's gentle, perhaps mischievous, influence on their merry gathering.
