George Dyson's Evening Service in D Major sets the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis for SATB choir. The Magnificat, a prayer of praise and thanksgiving, finds its text here in a compelling setting that begins with the soaring declaration of the soul magnifying the Lord. The music responds to Mary's humble yet profound joy and her recognition of God's mighty acts, his mercy, and his favour towards the lowly. The setting moves between the Latin of the Vulgate and an English translation, with the composer employing the full resources of the SATB choir to convey the text's jubilant and reflective spirit.
