About Evening Scene
Elgar’s Evening Scene is a beautifully evocative SATB setting of a descriptive English text. The music captures the tranquil, drowsy atmosphere of twilight, with the vocal lines weaving together to paint a picture of the natural world settling down for the night. The composer uses the choir to depict the gentle sounds and subtle movements of the scene, from the tolling curfew bell and the hum of insects to the rustling leaves and the distant baying of a hound. It is a fine example of secular choral writing from the late Romantic period, perfect for conveying a mood of peaceful contemplation.
