About Es kommt ein Schiff, geladen
Hugo Distler's setting of the German Advent hymn Es kommt ein Schiff, geladen is a sacred work for SSA choir. The text, a 17th-century Marian hymn, uses the metaphor of a ship laden with cargo to describe the Incarnation. The vessel carries God's Son, the Word of the Father, with love as its sail and the Holy Spirit as its mast. It travels towards Earth, where the Word becomes flesh and the Son is sent to us. The hymn speaks of Christ's birth in Bethlehem, his sacrifice for humanity, and the spiritual journey of dying and rising with him to inherit eternal life. Distler's composition brings this profound theological imagery to life for three female voices.
