About Es ist ein Schnee gefallen
Caspar Othmayr was a German composer and lutenist of the 16th century. This four-part setting, Es ist ein Schnee gefallen (Snow has fallen), is a secular Lied. The German text speaks of hardship and cold, with the singer feeling isolated and unable to reach their beloved due to the snow. The lyrics convey a sense of loneliness and desperation, but end with an appeal for comfort and warmth in the arms of a loved one, suggesting that this embrace will see them through the harsh winter.
