About Empio tiranno Amore
Empio tiranno Amore opens with a vivid plea to the tyrannical god of Love, questioning why the heart is set ablaze if the eyes were to blame for their wandering. The text laments that if the eyes opened the way for Cupid's arrows, they should be punished. It goes on to question what reward the foolish eyes will receive for the death of the heart, and if they will close in resignation. This secular Italian madrigal for SSATB voices explores the pain and confusion of unrequited or painful love, a common theme in Renaissance part-music. Nanino's setting captures the dramatic and emotional intensity of the poetry.
