ẸKU EWU, MARIA

"Ẹku Ewu, Maria" is a beloved Nigerian Christmas carol that brings a deeply traditional Yoruba greeting into the heart of the Nativity story. Composed by Laz Ekwueme, the piece takes the cultural practice of congratulating a new mother on safely delivering her child—"ẹku ewu," acknowledging the survival of the danger of childbirth—and offers it to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a warm, profoundly human way for a choir to welcome the newborn Christ, bridging indigenous joy with the mystery of the Incarnation.

The arrangement is set for a mixed choir with a Mezzo-Soprano solo, unfolding with a gentle, lilting folk melody. The soloist first introduces the greeting, praising Holy Mary and praying that her Son will grow to be as great as the Father ("Ọmọ yin adagba, ato Baba"). When the full choir enters, the harmonies swell with a sense of communal celebration, echoing the way a village gathers to rejoice with a new family.

As the piece progresses, it transitions seamlessly into English verses that reflect on the salvation brought through Mary's pure womb. Choirs often sing this during Christmas concerts, Carol Services, or as a meditation during the Christmas season.
