Ecstasy by Amy Beach — Lyrics
Only to dream among the fading flowers,
Only to glide among the tranquil sea;
Ah dearest, dearest, have we not together
One long, bright day of love, so glad and free?

About Ecstasy
Amy Beach conjures a rapturous mood in this setting of a richly romantic English text. The SATB choir is given flowing lines that build in intensity, mirroring the poem’s exultant declarations of undying love. The music evokes a sense of blissful surrender, with moments of tender intimacy contrasted with passages of soaring passion. The text speaks of an enduring devotion, finding ultimate peace and ecstasy in the presence of a loved one, through life and even into death. Beach’s sensitive treatment of the words allows the choir to express profound emotional depth, making this a powerful concert piece for an accomplished ensemble.
