About Echoes

Frederick Brandeis’s part-song Echoes for sATB voices opens with a playful imitation of the natural phenomenon, with the upper voices often mirroring the lower ones. The English text then turns from the romantic evocation of sound returning across moonlit landscapes to the far sweeter echo of reciprocal affection. Brandeis’s music captures this shift, moving from lighter textures to a more heartfelt expression, illustrating the poet’s idea that the truest echo is a sigh of love answered in kind.
