Ecce Maria genuit

Stephan Mahu’s motet Ecce Maria genuit is a setting of a sacred Latin text suitable for Marian feasts or the liturgical season of Advent. The composer vividly portrays the unfolding prophecy of Christ’s birth and his identification by John the Baptist. The libretto moves from the announcement of Mary giving birth to a Saviour, to John’s astonished recognition of Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Mahu writes for a rich eight-part choir (ATTBB), creating a sonorous and devotional sound world for this significant text.
