EAT THIS BREAD

"Eat This Bread" is a gentle, meditative chant that draws the congregation into the mystery of the Eucharist. Originally composed by Jacques Berthier for the Taizé Community, its simple, flowing melody is designed to be sung as an ostinato—a repeating refrain that allows the words to sink deep into the heart. In the choir loft, it offers a moment of quiet reverence, shifting the focus from complex harmonies to pure, prayerful reflection.

Because the lyrics come straight from the Bread of Life discourse in the Gospel of John, it is a perfect choice for Communion. As the faithful process to the altar, the repeating lines create a unified, unbroken prayer. Choirs often sing the refrain continuously, sometimes layering solo verses or instrumental parts over the top, making the piece as long or as short as the Communion rite requires.
