Eat This Bread, Drink This Cup

"Eat This Bread, Drink This Cup" is a familiar and deeply prayerful chant from the Taizé Community, set to music by Jacques Berthier. It draws its text directly from the Gospel of John, presenting the words of Christ as a gentle, ongoing invitation. In our parishes, we frequently sing this during Communion. The simple, repeating refrain allows the congregation to join in easily without needing to hold a hymn book while processing to the altar.

The arrangement features a steady, four-part harmony for the choir during the refrain, creating a warm and grounded sound. Between these refrains, a cantor sings the verses, which recount the profound promises of the Eucharist. The cantor lines remind the faithful of the manna in the desert and Christ's promise to raise us up on the last day.

Because the melody is so natural and the words so direct, the piece naturally fosters a quiet, meditative atmosphere in the church. It gives the choir a chance to sing with restraint and devotion, helping everyone present to focus entirely on the mystery of the sacrament they are receiving.
