About Durch den Wald
Frederick Delius’s Durch den Wald is a setting for SATB choir of German text, exploring the contrasting moods of a forest. The composer evokes the initial brightness and bird song of a sunny woodland, where the distant call of a hunting horn promises a joyful arrival. This is followed by a transition to a darker, more somber atmosphere, where the sound of a stream seems to lament, and a sense of anxious waiting prevails. The music then shifts again as the text hints at a distant song and a colorful, bright visual, suggesting the awaited presence is finally near. The partsong captures the emotional journey inspired by the natural setting and the anticipation of companionship.
