The speaker finds joy in this state of passionate servitude, where freedom might flee and fear the cold, yet the fire burns without consuming and the knot is praised by the world. Neither fear nor sorrow loosens the grip; the ardour is tranquil and the entanglement sweet. The light that inflames the heart is so high, and the tie woven from such rich thread, that desire dies as the thought is born. Since such a beautiful flame shines on the heart and such a fine bond constrains the will, let the shadow be the servant and the ashes burn.
