About Dueil Angoisseus
Gilles Binchois was a prominent composer of the early Netherlandish school, a master of the Burgundian chanson. His Dueil Angoisseus is a secular ballade in French, here arranged for ATB and ATT voices. The text expresses profound sorrow and anguish, a lament of overwhelming grief, despair, and unending languor. The singer describes a heart filled with pain, living in darkness, and a body on the verge of departure, yet unable to find release through either healing or death. This powerful expression of emotional torment is characteristic of the late medieval chanson, where complex musical settings often amplified the poignant sentiments of the poetry.
