About Donne gentili
Girolamo Scotto was a composer active in the mid-sixteenth century, known for his secular vocal music. Donne gentili is a madrigal for three male voices (TTB) in Italian. The text speaks of noble ladies and courteous lovers, urging them to cast aside shame and sorrow. It describes how love, seated in their fair eyes, can draw tears that are yet precious, like pearls and diamonds. The poet finds such sweet suffering, arising from love’s gaze, to be a foretaste of paradise.
