About Domine, in auxilium
Palestrina's setting of Domine, in auxilium meum respice is a powerful motet for SATTB voices. The text, drawn from Psalm 70, is a plea for divine assistance in the face of enemies. The composer captures the supplication of the opening phrase, 'Lord, make haste to help me,' with earnest and flowing melodic lines. The latter part of the text, 'Let them be confounded and put to shame who seek after my life; let them be turned back and brought to dishonour who desire my hurt,' is treated with contrapuntal intensity, reflecting the dramatic turn of the psalm. This sacred Latin motet would serve as a stirring Offertory hymn or a profound choral offering.
