Die Nonne, Op. 145 No. 2 by Robert Schumann — Lyrics

About Die Nonne, Op. 145 No. 2

Schumann’s setting of Die Nonne captures the melancholic yearning of a nun gazing from her cell. The music opens with a gentle, flowing texture, the voices weaving together to evoke the peaceful, yet poignant, scene. As the text describes the sounds and sights of spring – the bleating sheep, the scent of blossoms, the birdsong – the music subtly reflects these images, at times tender, at others more restless. The poet’s gentle lament is finally met by the wind, which playfully blows a blossom into the nun's chamber, a moment of quiet solace. This four-part German text is a secular secular part-song for SATB chorus, vividly illustrating the contrast between inner reflection and the external world.
