About Di che t'ammiri stolto
Giovanni Francesco Anerio, a composer of the early Baroque period, wrote this sacred laude for three female voices (SSB). The text is in Italian and reflects a genre of devotional song that flourished in Italy, often associated with confraternities and public religious gatherings. The piece presents a grave and tremulous response from the Blessed Virgin, addressing a foolish soul who marvels at overflowing rivers when Rome itself is inundated by grave sins. It speaks of two abysses, one of sin and another of bitter wrath, drawing on apocalyptic imagery from the Book of Revelation and the prophet Jonah to urge repentance. The music would have been used to convey the urgent spiritual message of the text.
