About Devea la fredda neve
Paolo Virchi's Devea la fredda neve is a secular madrigal from the Italian Renaissance. This setting for SAATB,SATTB voices captures the expressive word-painting characteristic of the genre. The text describes how the cold snow, which should have brought coolness, instead ignited the composer's heart with fire, as Love itself hid within the snow and then descended into his heart, causing the snow to vanish and Love to remain. Virchi's music vividly illustrates this transformation, contrasting the imagery of cold and heat. It is a fine example of Italian polyphony from the period, rich in harmonic colour and emotional depth.
