About Deus in adjutorium
Giovanni Paolo Colonna's Deus in adjutorium is a setting of the opening versicle and Gloria Patri from the Vespers service. Written for double choir (SATB.SATB), this sacred Latin motet would have been performed during important liturgical occasions. The text, beginning Deus, in adjutorium meum intende, implores divine aid, a theme powerfully expressed by the grandeur of the double choir. The Gloria Patri section praises the Trinity, concluding with the traditional 'Amen Alleluia'. During Septuagesima and Lent, the Alleluia is replaced by 'Laus tibi Domine Rex aeternae gloriae', a solemn acclamation of praise appropriate for the penitential seasons.
