About Der Mondschein
Joseph Gersbach's Der Mondschein is a secular German partsong for SATB choir. The text evokes a serene night, with the moon and stars shining brightly while the forest is silent and mist rises from the meadows. The second stanza describes the world as peaceful and intimate in the twilight, like a quiet room where the day's troubles can be slept away. The final stanza uses the image of the partially visible but still beautiful moon to suggest that many things we dismiss are unseen by our own eyes, but are nevertheless real and complete. Gersbach's setting captures this contemplative and gentle mood.
