About Denbigh
Timothy Swan's setting of Denbigh opens with a powerful depiction of distress. The SATB choir enters with urgency, mirroring the text's plea for mercy in the face of persecution. The music powerfully conveys the emotional weight of the Latin psalm verses, which describe constant attack and deep tribulation. As the text shifts to express reliance on God despite earthly enemies, the music offers a sense of steadfast hope. The contrast between the overwhelming nature of the adversaries and the unwavering faith of the psalmist is vividly realised through the interplay of the voices. This motet is a compelling expression of spiritual struggle and ultimate trust in divine protection.
