This rondeau by Gilles Binchois opens with a fresh, declamatory melody in the top voice, soon joined by the lower voices in a lively homophonic texture. The three-part (STT) writing creates a close-knit sound world, characteristic of the Burgundian court. The French text expresses a growing desire to see and hear from a beloved lady, even to the point of despair if she proves cruel. The music reflects this blend of ardent affection and potential heartache, with moments of both tenderness and passionate declaration. It is a fine example of secular 15th-century French part-music.
