About Das Benedicite vor dem Essen, SWV 429
The opening words of Heinrich Schütz's setting of Das Benedicite vor dem Essen, "Aller Augen warten auf dich, Herr" (All eyes wait upon you, Lord), immediately set a scene of humble expectation. The text continues to paint a picture of divine providence, with God opening His bounteous hand to satisfy all living things with His favour. This motet for SATB voices, sung in German, is a sacred table grace, perfect for setting a reflective and grateful mood before a meal. Schütz's setting would have been a powerful and moving addition to Lutheran services and domestic devotion in the 17th century.
