Hark! The Redeemer from on high
Sweetly invites His favorites nigh;
From caves of darkness and of doubt,
He gently speaks, and calls us out.
"My dove, who hidest in the rock,
Thine heart almost with sorrow broke,
Lift up thy face, forget thy fear,
And let thy voice delight mine ear.
"Thy voice to me sounds ever sweet;
My graces in thy countenance meet;
Though the vain world thy face despise,
'Tis bright and comely in mine eyes."
Dear Lord, our thankful heart receives
The hope Thine invitation gives;

About Condescension
This anthem for SATB choir sets an English text of comfort and divine invitation, suitable for services of reflection or assurance. The lyrics, drawing on biblical imagery of the dove and the beloved, express a tender dialogue between the Redeemer and the faithful soul. The composer Daniel Read conveys the tenderness of the divine call to come forth from darkness and fear into the light of grace. The choir will respond with thankful hearts, acknowledging the hope offered and pledging their voices in prayer and praise. The text culminates in a declaration of mutual belonging, where hearts and hopes are joined in a spiritual union.
