About FOOD OF THE SOUL

"Food of the Soul" is a gentle, deeply reverent Communion hymn that draws the congregation into the quiet intimacy of receiving the Eucharist. Abraham Uke sets a simple, earnest prayer to music, asking Jesus to become the nourishment of our eternal life and to make our hearts His dwelling place. When the choir introduces the refrain, it feels like a personal invitation to the Lord, setting a reflective tone for the Communion procession.

The four verses walk through the mystery of the Eucharistic banquet. They remind us that Christ's body and blood are the true sustenance we need, echoing the scriptural promise that whoever shares in this feast of love will be raised on the last day. By the time the choir reaches the fourth verse, the lyrics turn to the familiar, humbling words of the Centurion before Communion: "Lord I am not worthy to receive you, only say a word and my soul shall live."

Singing this piece during Mass gives the congregation a moment to pause and reflect on the gift of the altar. The melody is straightforward enough for the faithful to internalize, yet it carries a quiet dignity that allows the choir to lead the worship with grace. It is a wonderful choice for any Sunday where the readings focus on the Bread of Life, or simply as a staple for the Communion rite.
