Come, thou long-expected Jesus by John Stainer — Lyrics
About Come, thou long-expected Jesus
Sir John Stainer's setting of Come, thou long-expected Jesus is for SATB choir and piano. The text, a famous Christmas hymn by Charles Wesley, expresses profound longing for the coming of the Saviour, seeing him as Israel's strength and consolation, the desire of every nation, and the joy of every longing heart. Wesley reflects on Jesus's dual nature as a child and a king, praying for his kingdom to be brought to earth and for his spirit to rule in our hearts. The hymn concludes with a prayer for redemption and ascension through Christ's merit. Stainer's familiar tune is widely sung and brings out the devotional and hopeful character of the words.
