About Come po far el cielo (Petrucci setting)
The composer asks how heaven can allow him to live in such despair, or how fortune can be so cruel. He feels deeply pained and distressed, with no solace to his suffering. His fate seems to grant him nothing but bitter sorrow, and he questions how justice can allow him to endure such pain for his service and love. This secular Italian frottole, for SATB voices, sets a text of profound lament and questioning of fate. The composer’s plea is a cry against the perceived injustice of his suffering in love.
