Christus, Op. 97 by Felix Mendelssohn — Lyrics
About Christus, Op. 97
These opening verses paint a vivid picture of Christ as the bright morning star, full of grace and truth. The text hails him as the root of Jesse, Son of David, and the composer's king and bridegroom, who has captured his heart. He is described as lovely, friendly, beautiful, glorious, great, noble, and highly exalted. The verses then address him as a precious pearl, a worthy crown, and the Son of God and Mary, a king of high birth. His sweet Gospel is likened to milk and honey, and the singer implores Christ to pour his love's flame deeply into their heart. This setting for SATB voices, with German and English translations provided, comes from Mendelssohn's oratorio Christus.
