Christe redemptor omnium

This setting of the Latin hymn Christe redemptor omnium is for six voices (STTBB and a lower optional baritone). The text is a fervent plea for salvation, invoking Christ as redeemer. It asks for protection from present and future evils, through the intercessions of heavenly hosts, prophets, apostles, martyrs, confessors, and virgins. The prayer extends to the monastic orders and all saints, asking to be made partakers of Christ. It concludes with a petition for the removal of the perfidious nation from the faithful and for unity under God, before praising the Trinity. John Sheppard, a prominent English composer of the Tudor period, was known for his contributions to sacred music, and this work exemplifies the rich polyphonic tradition of its time.
