Cargoes

Peter C. Lutkin’s setting of John Masefield’s evocative poem Cargoes unfolds in three distinct sections, each vividly portraying a different vessel and its wares. The music opens with the stately procession of an ancient ship, its journey across distant seas rendered in lush SATB harmonies. This gives way to the dynamic energy of a Spanish galleon, the texture shifting to reflect the jewels and riches it carries. Finally, the piece concludes with the gritty reality of a modern British freighter, its humble cargo conveyed through a more percussive and driving musical language. The work masterfully captures the contrast and continuity of maritime trade across the ages, from antiquity to the early 20th century.
