About Canticle of the Sun
Jennifer Bastable’s Canticle of the Sun is an ode for SSATBB choir, setting a sacred Italian text. Drawing inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi’s famous poem, the music seeks to capture the wonder and praise found in the original text. The opening movements embrace the grandeur of God, acknowledging His omnipotence and majesty. The music then turns to celebrating creation, personifying the sun, moon, and stars as expressions of divine beauty. The choir’s eight parts offer rich harmonic possibilities, allowing for a full and resonant portrayal of this ancient text of adoration. The Italian lyrics, medieval in origin, speak directly of praise to the Creator through His works.
