About Cantiam di Dio
Andrea Gabrieli's Cantiam di Dio is a sacred Italian madrigal, written for a large choir of SATT.ATTB.TTTB. The text is a hymn of praise to God, celebrating his creative power and his sacrifice. The first part calls upon the singers to dedicate their voices and intellect to God, declaring him worthy of all praise, and contrasting his divine music with all other earthly songs. The second part speaks of the rewards of living faith and devotion to God. Gabrieli's setting would have been performed in the grand spaces of Renaissance Venice, perhaps in St. Mark's Basilica, where he served as organist.
