About Cantantibus organis (1588)
This Magnificat antiphon, Cantantibus organis, was composed by Jean de Castro around 1588. The text speaks of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, praying with all her heart to God. As organ music plays, she dedicates her heart and body to Him, asking that she may not be put to shame. The composer treats this devotional text with rich, imitative polyphony. This setting is written for two choirs, SSATB and AATTB, offering a grand and sonorous effect, suitable for occasions of solemnity and reflection. The Latin lyrics convey a deep sense of spiritual commitment and reliance on divine protection.
